Islamophobia: Making Muslims the EnemyBy Peter Gottschalk, Gabriel Greenberg

In the minds of many Americans, Islam is synonymous with the Middle East, Muslim men with violence, and Muslim women with oppression. In the post-9/11 world, a clash of civilizations appears to be increasingly manifest and the War on Terror seems a struggle against Islam. These are symptoms of Islamophobia.

The term "Islamophobia" accurately reflects the largely unexamined and deeply ingrained anxiety many Americans experience when considering Islam and Muslim cultures. Historically, Americans have seldom given voice to these anxieties since they have had, until the last half-century, few connections to Muslim cultures and a small domestic Muslim minority. However, in times of crisis, such as the Iranian hostage situation or, most recently, the September 11th attacks, the long-simmering resentments, suspicions, and fears inherited along with a Christian European heritage manifest themselves most directly in conditions that appear to affirm Americans' darkest concerns. Like a vicious cyclone feeding off of its own energy, Islamophobia takes uncommon events as evidence fitting its worst expectations and turns these into proof that perpetuates those ill-informed expectations.

Islamophobia explores the presence of these anxieties through the political cartoon―the print medium with the most immediate impact. This book shows graphically how political cartoons dramatically reveal Americans' casual demonizing and demeaning of Muslims and Islam. And the villainizing is shown to be as common among liberals as conservatives. Islamophobia also discusses the misunderstanding of the Muslim world more generally, such as the assumption that Islam is primarily a Middle Eastern religion, where as the majority of Muslims live in South and Southeast Asia, and the misperception that a significant portion of Muslims are militant fundamentalists, where as only a small proportion are.

From Publishers Weekly
Gottschalk, a professor of religion at Wesleyan University, and his former student Greenberg analyze what Islamophobia is and how it is manifested through political cartoons, many of which are included with revealing results. The authors say that Islamophobia—a racistlike bias against Muslims based on stereotypes—is very real, manifesting in some cartoons that are obviously biased and others that appear on the surface to be more sympathetic. Cartoons, symbolic of wider feelings and paranoia about Islam, reflect misunderstandings and prejudice among Westerners and, like a self-fulfilling prophecy, often serve to widen cultural chasms, particularly between Muslims and American Christians. Symbols and caricatures, like the veil, the mosque, scimitars and large-nosed profiles, can be misused or conflicting; for example, the scimitar, frequently used to depict Muslim violence, is of doubtful Muslim heritage but is actually used in American military uniforms. Gottschalk and Greenberg offer a particularly chilling comparison of cartoon depictions of Jews prior to World War II and their Muslim counterpart caricatures today. Even cartoons mocking conservative Christians are more neutral and less intentional in their hatred, say the authors. With its incendiary cover art and on the heels of the Danish cartoon controversy, this book should attract well-deserved attention. (Oct.)

Review
This ground-breaking book should be read and reread-readers will become acutely aware how cartoonists have repeatedly disparaged all things Muslim and Arab. The book teaches us to see beyond damaging stereotypes. It is a remarkable achievement, illustrating that although there exists a fine line between satire and racism. (Jack G. Shaheen, author, Reel Bad Arabs)

If 9/ll jolted Americans into a new awareness of Islam, it has produced less insight and understanding than caricature and fear. Part of the knowledge gap is due to Muslims themselves, but the larger problem derives from deliberate distortions projected via the media (radio, TV, print and the Internet) in concert with scurrilous scholarship and Christian right Islamophobes. This deftly constructed and amply illustrated volume by Gottschalk and Greenberg will expose Islamophobic distortions while also providing a much needed antidote to their public venom. (Bruce Lawrence, Duke University)

As Islamophobia threatens to become the new anti-Semitism, Islamophobia: Making Islam the Enemy becomes 'must' reading. Gottschalk and Greenberg perceptively and graphically demonstrate the extent to which prejudice and discrimination against Islam and Muslims have become inherent in American mainstream culture. (John L. Esposito, author, What Everyone Needs to Know about Islam)

Islamophobia is an important contribution to the understanding of prejudice as a common factor in American culture, particularly the media. The analysis of political cartoons convincingly shows how pervasively anti-Arab and anti-Muslim attitudes have become accepted, even by people who probably consider themselves fair-minded. This study needs to be read by everyone concerned with the problems of religious and racial bias in America today. (Carl W. Ernst, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill)

A must read for anyone interested in understanding the underlying challenges that Muslims face in America. Provides an important insight into the stereotyping of Muslims that daily projects them as the different 'other.' (Yvonne Haddad, Georgetown University)

Islamophobia. Making Islam the Enemy is a very well-written, timely and incisive book about a topic that is finally starting to win the attention of the American public. The authors take the reader through a journey of Western suspicion and prejudicial depiction of the religion of Islam, from the Crusades to more recent political encounters with Muslim powers. They present a fascinating review of American media presentations of Islam and Muslims, including film, television and political cartoons. Islamophobia is a fairly presented, sharply critical exposé of the roots and manifestations of western fear and suspicion of this important world religion. It should be required of every high school and college student of history, political science and American social studies. (Jane Smith, Hartford Theological Seminary)

Gottschalk, a professor of religion at Wesleyan University, and his former student Greenberg analyze what Islamophobia is and how it is manifested through political cartoons, many of which are included with revealing results...With its incendiary cover art and on the heels of the Danish cartoon controversy, this book should attract well-deserved attention. (Publishers Weekly)

Contains a thoughtful discussion and is bound to stimulate interest among readers. (Middle East Journal, Winter 2008)

This slim volume by Gottschalk and Greenberg is a splendid teaching tool for classroom use, not only because it provides a readily accessible narrative about American stereotyping of Islam and Muslims, but also due to its focus on the political cartoon. This would be a beneficial text for undergraduate courses on Islam or the Middle East, since it is both accessible and tackles a popular art form that has almost universal appeal. (Daniel Martin Varisco, Hofstra University; author of Islam Obscured: The Rhetoric of Anthropological Representation Contemporary Islam, December 3, 2008)

This is one of those books which should be widely read; a concise explanation of “energy” as relates to society beginning with terms and definitions which most people do not consider. Smil starts with the obvious (but often overlooked) statement that we on earth have no source of energy which is not provided by the sun in some form or another. From there, we start with the calculations regarding the number of calories any human needs to get through the day; pretty basic and clearly explained values. This is followed by the overall history of energy in human society, beginning with foraging and scavenging societies, using human muscle energy in more effective forms as a result of human reasoning; tools. Accompanied by (largely effective) sidebar notes, the narrative then progresses through the use of draft and ridden animal muscle, direct water and wind power, and then on to the use of ‘stored’ solar energy in the form of carbon and radioactive fuels, to the present. The fragility of society prior to modern use of those ‘stored’ sources is eye-opening and should serve as a corrective to anyone hoping to return to some romantic, pristine, autarky.I’m sure this was not intended for the general audience; the terminology and notation suggests and requires a certain level of education. But at times Smil seems to change units of measure in what looks a bit of braggadocio. Joules, calories, watts, any will do, but switching back and forth requires mental gymnastics and introduces the chance of errors; there is no reason to make a book less understandable than the transfer of information requires.Similarly, there is no reason for the pedantry regarding the phrase “Industrial Revolution”; I recall no one using the phrase to mean a ‘revolution’ in X years. As it was intended to mean a rapid change in many social arrangements, it was just that and is a useful shorthand for that phenomenon.Disregarding such caviling, we are, at well-researched and well-argued length, presented with the uncontroversial fact that we are consuming carbon energy resources far beyond replacement rates and that use is resulting in environmental problems which could be very serious. Fortunately, the author is not given to hyperbole; those environmental problems are neither certain in time or severity. But as Smil makes clear, there are really few alternatives. Our recent fantasies regarding wind or solar are never going to provide the energy surplus we currently enjoy, even if we had 100% battery storage technology. There is simply not enough ‘instant’ solar energy available to support the style to which we have become accustomed and others hope to achieve.Citing some studies regarding ‘happiness’ vs wealth which I find far from convincing, the author seems to come down on the side of drastically reduced energy consumption. He never suggests coercion to achieve that end, but it’s doubtful that those who are used to luxury and those who quest for it are likely to voluntarily reduce that standard of living or the desire for it, regardless of Smil’s personal (righteous!) choice of a 1Kw automobile.Begging to differ, I come down on the ‘let’s develop non-carbon energy’ side; nuclear. And if we are to prevent those possible environmental problems, we’d better get going on developing safe nuclear energy right now, rather than whingeing about the morality of Exon’s profit margin.

I purchased this book based on a recommendation by Bill Gates. It's very interesting and takes you through the history of how humans have used and transformed energy and how that increasingly efficient energy use has advanced societies (and where it hasn't).Be aware that it is very technically dense with a lot of specifics and almost reads like a textbook so it's not what I would call a "light read" but if you like that sort of thing than this book is recommended.

I am only 70% through the book, knowing that the rest will touch upon the noton that our dependence on a very high consumption of energy based on fossil fuels is unsustainable and that renewables gives only some comfort to this conclusion. As an economist I truly which that this perspective was more commonly available through education, as the available energy influcence on economic wealth and especially a long term perspective on this is severly overlooked in todays financial world. So thumbs up, 5 stars, is given to the author for puting the whole energy history in context, and how vital it is to appreciate our fossil fuel workhorses for now and it also led to my appreciation that we can use the energy surplus as today to prepare for a sustainable future of tomorrow. Even with less energy, it is possible to sustain a civilisation based on "energy helpers" so that living standards are still acceptable. The calculations back and forth when it comes to Joules/tons/kwh (or even barrels) is very useful for engaging the mind outside speed reading. An eye opener for me was the 90% energy conversion for electricity for kinetic energy as opposed to 40% for diesel and 25% for gasoline. Going electric for personal transportation based on renewables really makes sense overall!

Truly fascinating. It is hard to describe how impressive this masterful history is. A summation of a world of knowledge in a thorough, understandable, and context-rich book. Required reading for anyone interested in energy, sustainability, and the future of humanity.

Based on my previous Vaclav Smil reading, I was expecting (hoping) for more of a big-picture technical survey (along the line of "the physics of building and maintaining civilizations"). I was somewhat disappointed to discover a conventional historical narrative of the discovery and exploitation of the various familiar energy sources. Admittedly, more a case of missed expectations rather than any specific shortcoming of the book.

I was really disappointed in this book. It’s a history and is full of facts that seem almost randomly addressed. There is a lot of interesting information, but none of it seems to have a point , it’s just a collection of data. The citations are probably important to someone, but to a non academic they are just irritating and disrupt the flow of the text. I found Richard Rhodes’ book Energy:a human history much more informative and much much more entertaining.

As a mechanical engineer, I was taught a lot about energy and worked with it my whole career. I've always loved history as well. Now, I read a book that traces the human story along with the thread of how energy is found, grown, used, eaten, wasted...all that...and really dominates society in so many ways. This is a book long on detail so some may feel overwhelmed by it. My favorite part was the last 20% where the author appears to summarize the influence of energy on all the major domains of civilization. A book that I am keeping for reference and rereading.

Vaclav Smil’s books are always enjoyable. He demonstrates that the material civilisation that we have is the result of people acquiring the means of energy production. Yet he is also aware that energy is not the only thing that matters - it matters much, but the way it is used also depends on the culture and society.

I'm reading this book in Kindle app (version 3.5) on iPad 2 (iOS 6.1). Normallly a Kindle's book page take the whole screen, but with this one there're black margins on the sides both in portrait and landscape orientation. Morever, in landscape only page dispalyed instead of two. Also font size adjustment isn't available. All these mean, that screen space is used ineffectively and you have to manually zoom each page to make it more readable. It's not something you expect from an ebook. And to look at illustrations you have to lock rotation and turn iPad each time, because they're perpendicular to the text.I wish publishers of "The Basics of Process Mapping" put more effort into the Kindle edition. Or Amazon would control quality of Kindle books, like Apple controls quality of apps before before letting them into App Store.

Let's face it--there really isn't very much to process mapping. I've searched for books on it, and none of them seem to be more than 100 pages. The reason is that there isn't much to mapping out a process. So, for the limited subject material, this book does an excellent job. It was a fast read. I think I read it in about 2 hours, going pretty slowly through it.This book talks about three types of process maps, and from the book it says:"Since most readers may already have experience with flowcharts, the main emphasis of this book will be on relationship and process maps. The steps you should follow to create both types of maps are included."However, I think it focused equally on all three of the types of process maps. I mention this so you don't think that this will jut be a book on flowcharting.I thought it was good, and helpful. It gave me some new stuff to think about, and it's a basic look at process mapping. And, like I said, there really isn't a much more complex way of looking at it.

I would consider this just to be an average book on processing mapping. I finished reading this book and did learn some things, but felt it lacked practical examples. I ended trying out a more comprehensive book on UML.

I am a graduate industrial engineer and have been creating process studies since the mid-1960s. This is a handy reference tool and a "how to get started" for those analysts who are new or inexperienced in the field. The reader, student, analyst will find it thorough and thought provoking as they go from chapter to chapter. For those who have some years of experience you may find tips and explanations that you have forgotten or overlooked as you work through this wonderful book. The cost of the book is money well spent.

The book is well structured and explains three important process maps according to the required level of detail: Relationship map, cross functional map and flow chart. In order to exemplify these diagrams, a simple but complete case is used, the Quicks Lube. However, it lacks of examples and exercises. Nothing is said about indicators to measure improvements, like for instance lead time. Therefore it is advisable as a consulting source, not as a guide to implement process improvement nor as a text book.

Does a very good job of breaking it down to the elements of good mapping. Explained the reasoning behind each map very simply and completely. I learn something new everyday.

Excellent book. Using it to train staff of process flow diagramming.

I map out a lot of processes at work and have been doing it for years. However during my last assignment I was asked to map out one of the largest processes that I have ever worked on. I decided to order this book hoping that it would help me discover a more efficient way. Within the first two hours of reading the book I was surprised to see that I was using some of the shapes in Visio incorrectly. I had been doing this for years but never knew it and my co-workers didn’t either. This book also helped example the different types of flow charts and what they were for. Funny thing was that I had been mixing two different types of charts together for years without knowing any better. After reading this book my diagrams have been much better and more focused. I would recommend this book to others.
